Can dogs go on St Kilda Beach in summer?
Only on the signed sand. City of Port Phillip's dog parks and beaches page and the September 2025 beach map are the sources. From 1 November to 31 March, dogs are allowed on beaches only at specific times and locations. They are prohibited, on or off leash, outside those windows. The painted sign at the ramp you are using beats a blog.

- Pathways and boardwalks stay on-leash, including the promenade. Leash before you leave the sand.
- Keep 5 metres from playgrounds, barbecues, and exercise equipment.
- Greyhounds stay on-leash even in signed off-leash areas.

Is St Kilda West a year-round dog beach?
Yes. Off-leash on the sand where signed, all year. Pathways stay on-leash. That is the reliable weekday option when St Kilda Beach itself is a summer no. It is unfenced. Crowds, bikes, and other dogs are the limiter, not a gate. Parking is paid and tight. Do not leave a dog in a hot car while you hunt a bay.
What is the default rule off the sand?
Port Phillip default is on-leash everywhere except signed off-leash. Catani Gardens, the Bay Trail, and the promenade are on-leash. Organised sport: dogs off the playing surface while it is in use, and on-leash within 20 metres. Effective control still applies in off-leash areas. Council patrols seven days a week. Where should I actually go in summer?
If it is 2pm on a January Saturday, St Kilda Beach sand is mostly a no. Walk to St Kilda West and stay on the signed sand. If you want a swim with humans rather than a dog run, leave the dog at home. Elwood's summer window is 7:30pm to 10am between the groynes only. That is an evening or early-morning job, not a midday one. Catani Gardens is on-leash. The promenade is on-leash.
